Design and Function Team

Jörg Breuning, President/Co-Founder

Jorg BreuningJörg Breuning came in touch with green roofs, green roof technology or so called ecoroofs in 1980 as an employee at a German landscape company.

In 1985 he started his own company focused on extensive green roofs. Since 1985 his company has overseen uncountable projects and introduced many green roof innovations and installing techniques.

Jörg brought his extensive horticultural knowledge and hands-on experience to American companies for the first time in 1998. Soon after, Jörg founded Green Roof Service, LLC to serve the ever increasing American market. This would later become Green Roof Technology in 2011.

His expertise is recognized by universities, architects, manufacturers and Installers across the US and in Europe.

After 30 years and millions of square feet of green roofs, there is no doubt green roofs are his passion. He specially recognized for his ability to bridge the gap between theory and practice offering the best management practice and most efficient green roof solutions.

Green Roof Technology, LLC is committed to creating a sustainable new market for a better environment by orchestrating natural habitats, reducing air-born pollutants, reducing the heat island effect, saving energy and reducing storm water problems. His goal is to develop a multi-billion dollar market that would provide many new job opportunities in the USA just like he did in Germany.

Kathryn Harrold GRP, Green Roof Designer

Kathryn Harrold

Kat Harrold first learned about Green Roofs while pursuing her degree in Environmental Planning and Design with a focus in Landscape Architecture at Rutgers University.

While at Rutgers, Kat developed a career goal to heal through design. This was strongly influenced by working with Professor Seiko Goto as a research assistant in a study looking for a correlation between the cognitive health of the elderly and the presence of nature.

During the summer of her senior year, Kat expanded her goal to include not just the creation of healing environments for people, but to also heal the environment itself.

After graduation, seeing great potential with Green Roofs to heal both the qualitative aspects of built environments and the environment itself Kat decided to pursue this new frontier by taking the Green Roofs for Healthy Cities Boot Camp and became an Accredited Green Roof Professional in May 2010. Kat joined Green Roof Service in 2010 and enjoys a career of innovative design.

Andrew Cole Yanders, Assistant Green Roof Designer

Andrew received his Bachelors of Science in Economics from Pennsylvania State University with a focus on international developmental economics and decision theory.

Following graduation, Andrew traveled for the summer with friends to Martha’s Vineyard where he worked his first landscaping and gardening jobs.  In early autumn Andrew traveled with friends to Boaco, Nicaragua to live and work on a coffee and dairy farm owned by a fellow classmate at Penn State.  With limited resources at their disposal, Andrew and his small band of brothers set out to create the foundations of an eco-tourist resort.

Returning to Pennsylvania in the spring, Andrew again went to work at a landscaping company in Selinsgrove, Pa.  Deciding the experiences of the last two years in his life had radically changed his career ambitions, Andrew decided to return to Penn State University for the Spring Semester 2011 to study green roof and rain garden design with Dr. Robert Berghage.
