First Extensive Green Roof in the Dominican Republic

First Extensive Green Roof in the Dominican Republic.

More than 12 years ago my friends Miriam and Buschi decided to settle in Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic to educate the local people and tourists about animal welfare and a better interaction between humans and animals.

An awesome story that has grown and created support from all around the world. Universities, veterinarians and engaged individuals from North America and Europe spend their free time by helping them with hard work and donations, making a better life for animals and humans.

Beside their endless efforts for animal welfare their home has two large extensive green roofs that flourish since 12 years. It is quite an effort finding the right plants that can survive on less than 3 inch of soil mix. A thick, flexible, non-bituminous and root resistant waterproofing is the only German product of the green roof system. All other components were sourced locally and evolved over the years.

These green roofs are the first in the Dominican Republic and represent the basics of modern green roof technology – simple and effective without plastic elements or pre-planted containers.

First Garden Bridge for Pedestrians in North America.

Green Team at Green Roof Technology, - Friday, February 20, 2015

Modern Green Roof technology combined with a Blue Roof to minimize artificial irrigation, to maximize water retention and enable visitors to cross a busy four-lane highway without leaving the lush greening of a park.

The Garden Bridge at Universal Studios in Orlando is the first of its kind in Florida. Designed by Miles Architecture Group Inc., Libra Design Group and Green Roof Service LLC, the green bridge creates an innovative connection of Universal City developments. Selected ground covers, shrubs and trees escort pedestrians almost without notice that they are crossing over a busy highway. The distinctive landmark project is engineered with people in mind.

The Garden Bridge at Universal Studios Orlando project is approximately 3,000 sf (145' x between 18 and 25' wide). The bridge is designed to pond water in the granular drainage area to increase the water retention (a blue-green roof combination, Patent hold by Optigreen - 1978 and the first time introduced to North America by Jorg Breuning in 2001).

Unique projects require unique solutions. Keeping the costs for the structure low, the trees are located above the bridge's pillars. The walkway gently winds up to the bridge and over and is easy accessible for the handicapped or service carts.

The project was possible with an outstanding waterproofing solution by ALT Global. ALT Global meets the FLL requirements for root resitance.

This innovative green roof project is a master piece of teamwork between architects, structural engineers, landscape architects and green roof professionals with an open mind, environmental leadership and common sense.

Green Roof Revolution in Sydney

Green Team at Green Roof Technology, - Monday, April 21, 2014

By: Samantha Yurek

On April 7th, 2014, the City of Sydney, Australia approved a Green Roofs and Walls Policy. The Policy will be carried out by the Strategic Planning and Urban Design Committee of Sydney. A three year plan, its main goal is to raise awareness of the importance of green space in urban areas as well as promote the implementation of potential green roofs and walls.

Pinpointing Green Roofs in the City of Sydney

Sydney is already in the lead of the green revolution, with a total of 83 green roofs and walls throughout the city. In addition, 50-70 likely projects have been approved to construction and should be underway soon. The Green Roof Meadow at the Prince Alfred Park Pool is one of the largest in Sydney. Complete with 2,000 square meters of green space, including over 35,000 seasonal and native grasses.

The city is also home to One Central Park residential towers, featuring the world's tallest vertical garden at 33 stories. These gardens consist of 190 native Australian plants as well as 160 exotic species. Although it may not be the tallest for long - Shri Lanka is now in the running with plans to build a 46 story residential building, with multiple vertical gardens, proposed to be completed by the end of 2016.

Lucy Sharman, Sydney's Green Roofs and Walls Senior Project Officer explains, "With higher-density living and a growing population, we need to accommodate people in a healthy way and use urban space as wisely as possible." And it seems that advocating for a greener city is working. "We receive more than one development application each week for a green roof or wall," says Sharman.

The Green Roofs and Walls Policy isn't their only attempt to create a cleaner and healthier environment. The city has been working on many movements, such as 202020. Working towards 20% more green spaces in urban places by the year 2020.

Green Roofs in Singapore

Green Team at Green Roof Technology, - Monday, December 23, 2013

By: Samantha Yurek

In Southeast Asia. one island-city is rising above the rest. Singapore has been working on a greening blueprint of the city since 1992. Their ultimate goal: to evolve into a city within a garden! With approximately 272 square miles and 4.6 million people, the biggest challenge faced is space.

With 148 acres of vegetated roof space, Singapore has already made it a priority to promote green space. Careful planning has helped to conserve 9% of their total land mass to parks and nature reserves. In 1986, only 36% of Singapore was green space, compared to almost 47% known today.

The Parkroyal Hotel, opened earlier this year, is covered in green roofs and walls. Totaling 15,000 square meters of green space all together.

The School of Art, Design and Media at the NanYang Technological University in Singapore sports a curving green roof, giving the building a sleek look. As buildings continue to green, Singapore will grow closer to their goal of becoming a garden with a city nestled inside rather than a city with a few gardens.

Many companies have been involved with the green in of Singapore. To name one, Verditecture LTD, has been in the building and construction industries since 2003. A partner of Optigreen, they have been focusing most of their time on skyrise greenery.

Green Roof Collapse in Latvia

Green Team at Green Roof Technology, - Tuesday, November 26, 2013
By: Samantha Yurek

On Thursday November 21st 2013, an evolving green roof collapsed over top a Latvian supermarket. The market, open to the public at the time, was under construction because of a green roof and recreation area being installed for an adjacent residential building. The rooftop that buckled only covered one area of the market, however fifty-four people have been pronounced dead since Saturday and many more hospitalized.

The cause, although not completely pinpointed has been blamed on the overall green roof construction. The additional weight on the structure by the various green roof materials and growing media could have been exacerbated by the recent rain events. A current investigation is underway to determine if proper precautions and guidelines were followed throughout the planning and construction processes.

As explained in a previous blog post: The First Steps to Planning a Green Roof, checking the structural integrity of any building should always be the first step in the planning process. Not only should a green roof to have a long lifespan, it should also not put anyone in danger.

Designing for Resiliency in an Age of Uncertainty

Green Team at Green Roof Technology, - Tuesday, October 29, 2013

Resiliency was the motto of the 11th Cities Alive conference held in San Francisco last week. With more than 100 speakers, the conference demonstrated once again that modern green roof technology and living architecture are essential to address resiliency by adapting to urban environmental changes and climate change. Large scale extensive green roofs without permanent irrigation or solar garden roofs are the most sustainable solution for reducing the continuously mounting costs of disasters that are weather or climate related.

The conference disclosed many new details about cutting edge designs and it is now time to see how these can be implemented, how effective and how economical they are. Especially in cities where we created habitats for ourselves with asphalt and concrete. The conference showed refreshing trends for more natural environments. It isn't known whether rooftop farms (urban farming) are a solution, but these efforts create awareness, recreation and educate about living organisms and the importance in reducing food waste.

In different presentations, the combination of solar (PV) and extensive green roofs were marked as the most efficient roof top addition with the highest payback for the owner and the environment. Our solar garden roof fits perfectly into this future trend.

Great conference and great people, thank you GRHC.

Unterm Regenturm: Under the Raintower

Green Team at Green Roof Technology, - Wednesday, October 16, 2013

In 1992 Jörg Breuning, Green Roof Service LLC and Thomas Heuman, Heuman Gartenanlagen provided consulting services to Hundertwasser's architects, Springmann and Associates. It was quite an effort the contemporary artist and the City of Plochingen to develop an entire block of the city's historical district. This city has been around since the year 1146.

From the outside the historical buildings still remain the same and all facing to an intensive greenroof courtyard in the back. This courtyard and the backside of the buildings received an artists' distinguished signature in 1993. Efficient and gorgeous, the entire courtyard resides on a two story parking garage and grocery store, meanwhile the lush green environment above creates a different feeling. Hundreds of various plants decorate the landscape with paving materials snaking their way through to make perfect paths. The sloped roofs facing the courtyard are also fully or partially greened. Approximately fifty green roofs occupy the colorful, wavy historical buildings.

This particular construction of modern green roof technology underlines the artist's inspirations as well as supports diverse vegetation. The structure is a magnet to tourists and a true landmark of the region for over twenty years and well worth a visit!
