Practically all dry organic materials are combustible at relative low temperatures. Roof shingles or many waterproofing membranes on roofs are typically petroleum-based products (including Asphalt) and there is hardly any difference to dry organic materials. Some products are equipped with chemical fire retardants that could decrease the risk of spreading fire, unfortunately not the risk of leaks cause by heat and impact.


The living vegetation of fully functional and well-engineered green roofs contains moisture and most plants (especially succulent plants on large extensive green roofs) have a fraction of the energetic potential comparing to all other components used in a building. The green roof growing media (soil for the green roof plants) is a blend of different mineral components with an organic content of typically less that 15%. It is practically impossible to set this material on fire – even when the natural moisture content is not considered.

Fires or leaks on non-vegetated roofs caused by consumer or display fireworks could have been prevented if the building would have had a fully functional green roof without mono-culture vegetation, or if conventional roofs would be well-maintained (regular removing of organic debris from the roof and gutters).

 

Certainly a fire is the worst-case scenario; however in most cases smoldering firework parts (and cigarettes) are only causing leaks on unprotected roofs that are discovered much later and relate to costly repair. Roof warranties typically don't cover any sort of mechanical impact and they are -again- worthless. See blog post from 2014.

 

Any sort of fireworks damages or many other mechanical impacts are unknown on functional green roofs. Green roofs prevent leaks or even a fire and so it is the best payback is right there.

Natural Blow Job

Like an endless army of parachutists released from an airplane, seeds and fruits travel the wind currents and gentle breezes of the earth, possibly colonizing a distant mountain slope or fertile valley potentially 1000 miles from their origin. Literally hundreds of species in many plant families have adopted this remarkable method of dispersal and make the promoters of native plants look like a fool.

Imagine a little parachutist seed can fly 1000 miles in ten days it still takes probably 20-30 generations and 15-20 years getting around the globe. Seeds found in hail or high altitude air samples confirm that this is not a fiction.

Plants have very limited mobility and consequently rely upon a variety of dispersal vectors. Wind is only one and there are many other smart ways. The easiest might be humans. If a plant gives humans a trade-off (nice flower, fruit etc.) they can carry them as far and nowadays in a much short time.

Relocating to a faraway location isn’t always successful but it is necessary for the specie to survive in evolution where natural and manmade forces might eliminate the original place. Especially under fast changing climate conditions it is important for specie to stay flexible or to mix with similar species to create more resident ones.   

Comparing to this smart and self-sustaining way of plants, many humans make themselves to fool by either helping to transport the plants or by categorizing plants into native and non-native.  Doesn’t it sound like schizophrenia when you get a LEED point for native plants on a 500sf Green Roof downtown Manhattan and at the same time(GMO) corn is grown on almost 100,000,000 acres across the US?

There is no question that the worlds Gen-pool of all organisms must be preserved but the way as it is approached seems in most cases unprofessional and desperate.  Being 45 years a gardener, I understand that nature has its own way – we can be part of it but we can’t be the director of it.

First Extensive Green Roof in the Dominican Republic.

More than 12 years ago my friends Miriam and Buschi decided to settle in Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic to educate the local people and tourists about animal welfare and a better interaction between humans and animals.

An awesome story that has grown and created support from all around the world. Universities, veterinarians and engaged individuals from North America and Europe spend their free time by helping them with hard work and donations, making a better life for animals and humans.

 

Beside their endless efforts for animal welfare their home has two large extensive green roofs that flourish since 12 years. It is quite an effort finding the right plants that can survive on less than 3 inch of soil mix. A thick, flexible, non-bituminous and root resistant waterproofing is the only German product of the green roof system. All other components were sourced locally and evolved over the years.

 

These green roofs are the first in the Dominican Republic and represent the basics of modern green roof technology – simple and effective without plastic elements or pre-planted containers.

Living Green is not just an empty phrase for City of Stuttgart, Germany.  The history goes back almost 150 years as the “Stuttgarter Verschönerungs Verein” was founded. A powerful Association with an authority comparing to today’s City Department of Parks and Recreation. Even during the Nazi-Time the Association was entirely independent and was able to protect historical buildings, Parks and to increase living green with new parks and living green recreational areas.

Based on this history it was no accident that Stuttgart is the pioneer of an unmatched progressive Green Roof program in the 1980’s and the City of Stuttgart is still the leader with the most Green Roofs in the world.

Just recently the City revised the Building regulations for the entire State Baden-Württemberg that every building owner has to implement more living green. A controversial discussed item in politics because some people understood that as forcing Green Infrastructure – but it was meant to inspire building owners to value Green Infrastructure as an investment for the future with related high savings for operational costs.

In an newspaper article of Stuttgarter Nachrichten the new building requirements are explained including the benefits for the local infrastructure and the lasts high demand for well trained and educated Landscape people.

I was very excited to see that they used a current picture of a Green Roof project I installed in 1999/2000.

This Green Roof is a demonstrating project at a landscape company and covers their truck parking. The depth of the Green Roof reaches between 4 inch to 12 inch – from Sedums, perennials, shrubs to trees that grow over 15 feet. Since it is on a roof the reflecting pond is rather shallow, has a water feature and is lit up at night to create a private out door space for the company owner. The City of Stuttgart, Germany is a place where ecology and economy is closer together than in any other place on Earth I know.

Uneven Water Supply for West

WASHINGTON, June 18, 2014 -- The final water supply forecast for this year shows the West divided into a wet north and dry south while snowpack has already melted in much of the region, according to data from the USDA National Water and Climate Center (NWCC).

Washington, most of Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and the northern parts of Colorado and Utah are expected to have near normal or above normal water supplies through the rest of summer, according to the forecasts. Far below normal streamflows are expected for the southern parts of Oregon and Utah, southwestern Idaho, California, Arizona, New Mexico and western Nevada.

Many of these areas are in the nearly 500 counties across the country experiencing drought, 57 of them in California alone, according to USDA disaster designations.

This year saw near-record low snowfall in parts of Nevada, California, Arizona, New Mexico and the southern parts of Utah and Oregon. Even with some May precipitation, those areas remain dry.  The biggest change this season was in the Washington Cascades. At the beginning of February the snowpack was about half of normal, but it recovered and most of Washington will have a near normal water supply from snowmelt, according to the Center. 

Spring snowmelt is well underway, according to NWCC hydrologist Cara McCarthy. “A lot of our SNOTEL sites have already melted out, especially those in the southern half of the West,” McCarthy said.

Colorado had mixed weather during May. “They had winter and summer all in one month: snowmelt, snowfall, snowmelt,” said McCarthy. Heavy precipitation combined with snowmelt, causing flooding in parts of the state.

Forecasters monitor conditions all year, but June is the final forecast of the season. “These are snow-based water supply forecasts,” McCarthy said. “Typically by July there won't be enough snow left on the ground (to measure).”

In Western states where snowmelt accounts for the majority of seasonal water supply, information about snowpack serves as an indicator of future water availability. Streamflow in the West consists largely of accumulated mountain snow that melts and flows into streams as temperatures warm into spring and summer. USDA scientists analyze the snowpack, air temperature, soil moisture and other measurements taken from remote sites to develop the water supply forecasts.

The NWCC water supply forecast is part of several USDA efforts to improve public awareness and mitigate the impacts of climate change, including drought and other extreme weather events. Through the creation of the National Drought Resilience Partnership, launched as part of the President’s Climate Action Plan, federal agencies are working closely with states, tribes and local government to develop a coordinated response to drought.

In dry years most Therophytes like
Asteriscus aquaticus are able to flower as very small plants and produce seeds that are able to survive evon more unfavourable seasons.

Leave Only Footprints, Take only Memories

Many people wouldn't think twice when gathering a lovely bouquet of flowers while out for a hike. But maybe this is a lesson we should all be practicing and passing down generations, when out enjoying the great outdoors. Transporting flowers for your own benefit is erroneous and punishable in certain situations. 

Although the United States doesn't have a specific law protecting wildflowers from being violently up-rooted, the Endangered Species Act of 1973 does cover all of the plants that are slowly vanishing.

Many states have specific laws regarding plants. For example, North Carolina's Plant Protection and Conservation Act states that it is unlawful "to possess any protected plant, or part thereof, which was obtained in violations of this Article or any rule adopted thereunder." If caught, fines can rise as high as $1000.

There are many reasons why you shouldn't pick wildflowers or take plants from the wild. Not only does it reduce the vibrancy of the location, but it also can be damaging to the environment. The USDA explains it perfectly, "We don't often realize it, but wildflowers support entire ecosystems for pollinators, birds, and small animals on a micro scale. Butterflies and other insects, small birds, and animals depend on seeds, nectar, and pollen for their food supply and life support system. In addition, some pollinators are not very mobile or have very small home ranges or depend on just one species of plant and die once their habitat has been destroyed."

In some cases, transporting flowers from the wild can also aid in the spread of invasive species.

 

It may not be your first reaction when someone goes to pick a few flowers, but just keep in mind that they are a living object as well, attempting to survive and reproduce just like the rest of us. And is it really worth picking these plants, only to have them wilt in a matter of hours or days? Especially when you could be enjoying them all spring and summer if you were to simply let them be.

So my advice to you is, instead of pocketing flowers from Mother Nature's garden, it is just as easy to take a short trip to your local nursery. Not only will there be a great selection on plants to choose from, you will directly be supporting your local community.

Only Natives on Green Roofs?

In 1999 North America discovered that modern green roof technology is more than just an exclusive garden for a few wealthy people on top of a building. Experts understood very quickly that there are unmatched advantages of bringing back nature into locations where it was before.

With this enthusiasm, a lot of environmentalists and environmental organizations started to notice various opportunities to improve, simplify or promote themselves in many ways. Some of these ideas might sound glamorous, but the bigger picture concerning nature, is often disregarded.

In a previous blog post we reported about the ridiculous reductionist research of comparing reflective roofs with green roofs. Today we want to focus on the hype of native plants for green roofs:

Many Americans call a living organism native if these organisms have been on this continent before North America was discovered by European settlers. In their naivety, they have completely forgotten how the Natives have discovered and have lived on the land hundreds to thousands of years before.

So called Native people did the same as any organism; they expanded from their original locations to secure the species. While migrating and expanding over continents, all living organisms will change their environment accordingly. Microorganisms like bacteria or macro organisms like humans follow in the same footprints in evolution. The migration of European settlers did that as well and eventually became 'native'.

For most American people (as mentioned on Wikipedia) the opposite of native is "invasive". This discrimination is completely ignorant to the fact that something must be introduced first before it is invasive, encroaching, or just simply trespassing. 

It is even a bigger discrimination and ignorance of God's creation or evolution (whichever you prefer) when these people ( a lot of them call themselves experts) tell us that approximately 1,000 hectares of Bamboo scattered across the USA are a problem for when they call native species. However, at the same time, 1,000,000 hectares (1,000 times more) of genetically modified corn is not a problem. On top of this blatant discrimination, these 'tunnel-view' educated people (including LEED™) are pointing out that roofs are an ideal place for what they deem native plants.

Rooftops might be a stepping stone environment for plants that have been in North America for many thousands of years but when we try and set them up in a new place it is like a conversation of a narrowed down selection of species and disregarding the entire picture. It is obvious that history repeats itself - there are still existing reservations for Native Americans and we all know what effort this was, how discriminating this was and how much diversity, knowledge and inspiration we have lost. We are essentially treating native plants in the same way and that has nothing to do with environmental protection.

These so-called native plants must have a so-called native environment and require all the natural players (other living organisms) to thrive.

* Jeffersonia diphylla for example depends on ants to spread and what building owners want to have colonies of ants?

* The big family of Trifolium (stamped as a weed by nurseries) requires the stiff hair of animals to fulfill their natural calling - how many deer of bears do you want on your roof?

* Or shall we shoot all the birds that spread seeds from introduced trees?

The point of this blog is that any type of nature is better than covering the ground with impervious surface areas like asphalt, concrete of ground mounted solar factories. All our environmental issues are caused by the loss of natural environments. It is also much cheaper to protect these natural environments where they are and avoid relocation into reservations (such as rooftops). Simply by reducing footprints of man-made structures and concentrating human settlements to specific location allows these so-called natives organisms to thrive and to continue their journey of evolution.

Joe’s Paint Releases: New Instant Green Roofs

Our favorite environmental expert and green roof research specialist Joe is up to his old tricks.  Joe hit the PR circuit again this week releasing a full range of new roof greening products. 

Not satisfied with only offering a green roof in a can, Joe is now offering a full line of instant green roofs.  His new products include a highly reflective white paint for roofs and façades. The can comes with a pair of sun glasses and two cartons of greasy sunscreen (SPF 90) for an entire neighborhood.   

The best green roof and green wall product is already successful on the markets: An artificial grass mat that can be rolled out.  Joe has the fake grass in multiple colors to create Blue Roofs, Brown Roofs and Red Roofs. The good thing is, that after a season you can also fill-up the landfills with toxic waste and contributing your part to a healthy growth of the economy.

Visiting 1st Solar Garden Roof

A vast experimental roof top garden is located on the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation Building on Randall’s Island.  A few years ago the department opened its roof top up to companies to display their latest innovations in green roofing.  Over the years several dozen technologies have been installed, making the roof top home to hundreds of kinds of plants.  From lightweight extensive green roofs, to vegetable farms, to solar garden roofs, all kinds of green roofs are open for public tours.

During the early spring of 2012 we had the pleasure of installing four of our Sun-Root™ Modules on the roof, making the department’s building home to the first Solar Garden Roof System in the United States.  Super Storm Sandy made landfall only 6 months after installation and the system was successfully wind tested with maximum sustained winds at 85 mph with some gusts reaching 92 mph.

The Oldest Existing Green Roof in the World

Located in the city of Lucca, tucked into the rolling hills of Tuscany, Italy, you will find a most magnificent scene. The medieval architecture of the city is gorgeous, but one tower stands taller than the rest.  Attracting more attention as a consequence of the oak trees flourishing on the roof. Seven oaks were originally planted on the roof of the Torre Guinigi back in the 14th or 15th century. Although replacements have been planted over the decades, the seven residing today are still said to be hundreds of years old. Their roots grew together, penetrating the ceiling and creating a more sturdy structure. Oak trees were specifically chosen by the Guinigi family to represent renewal and rebirth. If visiting Italy, this is a great place to visit, for a few Euros you may climb to the top and see this view for yourself!
